Day One: The BIG farewell!

June 15th will always be one to remember for a group of 52 teenagers, 4 chaperones, and one amazing bus driver. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, our group assembled at the Brookstown Inn for our BIG farewell. Teenagers came from near and far to take part in the trip of a lifetime.

After packing the bus, giving final hugs and a last wave goodbye, we pulled out at 6:30am sharp. Traveling along I77 and I64, through the mountains of West Virginia, the bus remained somewhat quiet. That didn't last long! For lunch we stopped and enjoyed a nice picnic just inside the state of Kentucky. It was a great opportunity for conversation to take root and friendships to begin.

Our first stop in Louisville was at Churchill Downs, one of the most famous horse racing tracks. Everyone enjoyed the tour of the track and seeing where the magic of the Kentucky derby happens. We even spent a little time in the Derby museum racing and making bets of our own, WHAT FUN!

Our next step was to check into the hotel and get a little glammed up for our first meal together. For the first meal we traveled into Starlight, Indiana. We drove through corn fields, and saw some pretty impressive farms on our way to Joe Huber Family Farm. Joe Huber's is no ordinary restaurant. We were seated around large tables and enjoyed a good ole' dinner, family style. We dined on fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread and apple butter. Yum! Yum!

After dinner, we took a photo op on the dock in front of their pond! Playing with geese, swinging, and socializing finished up our experience at the farm and our first day together!

What a wonderful start to such an amazing journey!

The grand goodbye!
